Sharing stories and news about our schools is a high priority for Archuleta School District, which is one of the reasons why the district hired Communication Specialist Kim Elzinga as an independent contractor in January of this year. One of her goals involves setting up online communication platforms to connect directly with ASD parents and the broader Pagosa Springs community.
In the communication field since graduating from college in 1982, Kim brings with her a wealth of experience in all different avenues of print media and online communications. Beginning an email newsletter campaign was a high priority.
"When I first started at the district, I was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of really great content that could be shared with those who would like to know what's happening in our schools," says Elzinga, who served as the communications specialist with the English Department at the University of Colorado Boulder for 2 1/2 years before returning to Pagosa Springs.
Elzinga is also a part-time substitute teacher for the district. "It's been a long time since I attended a preK-12 school, so it was eye-opening to witness how much things have changed," she relates. "I wish everyone could have the experience of being a sub. It wouldn't take long to get an idea of how amazing our teachers, administrators, staff and especially our kids are."
"The issues affecting our schools today are complex and intricate, especially for a small district. When you don't know the stories, you can't truly appreciate the effort all of those connected to our schools contribute. I'm honored to be a part of the team," she comments.
This fall, the district launched its first e-newsletter in an effort to share great stories and important information with anyone interested in the future of the ASD schools. The district invites anyone -- parents, grandparents, community members and stakeholders -- to subscribe.
As a subscriber, you will receive the ASD e-news twice a month during the school year as an email in your inbox. One edition will focus on district updates, while the next will feature individual school highlights. Both will contain links to make it easier for you to access important info. You are free to discontinue receiving our newsletter at any time, but we hope you stay with us for all the latest information and important dialogues on issues that affect education excellence in our district.
