At the request of the Board of Education, a committee of 14 community members and district staff have been meeting to discuss the continuation of the 2018 Archuleta School District mill levy override (MLO). In 2018 voters passed an MLO with 61% approval that funds teacher salaries and public safety. The MLO will expire in 2025 unless the voters reauthorize it. You can learn more about the MLO here. 

In June, the committee commissioned a scientific poll of 300 Archuleta School District voters and today, July 10th, they reviewed the results which you can view here. 

The poll asked voters: 

WITHOUT INCREASING TAXES, SHALL ARCHULETA COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 50JT BE AUTHORIZED TO EXTEND THE $1.7 MILLION ANNUAL TAX APPROVED BY THE VOTERS IN 2018 SCHEDULED TO EXPIRE IN 2025, TO BE DEPOSITED IN THE GENERAL FUND AND USED FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES INCLUDING BUT NOT

LIMITED TO:

• RECRUITING AND RETAINING HIGHLY QUALIFIED TEACHERS AND STAFF, AND
• PROVIDING SECURITY AND MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS FOR STUDENTS?

74% of all registered voters said yes with 17% saying no and 9% undecided.

The committee will continue to meet and discuss what their recommendation to the Board of Education will be - should this MLO continuation question be placed on the ballot? If so, when and what should the ballot title be?

The committee expects to make their recommendation to the Board at their August 8th meeting.
