Sick Students: When to Stay Home

Coughs in Children ...

Families often wonder when students should stay home from school. For many families, this decision can be even more difficult because of work responsibilities and lack of child care options. We understand it can be a hardship for both the student and the parent or guardian to miss school. It is important for your student's health, as well as the health of our entire school community, to stay home when there are signs your student may be contagious to others.

Our school health staff follows and asks you to follow these rules:
    • If your student has had a temperature of 100.4 F or higher, please keep your student home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal without the help of fever-reducing medication.
    • If your student has vomited or has diarrhea, please keep them home until 24 hours after the last episode.
    • If your student has a rash that may be related to a disease such as chicken pox or measles, or if the cause of the rash is unknown, contact your family medical provider before sending your student to school.
    • If your student has a persistent cough that severely limits their ability to participate at school or causes them to vomit from the force of the coughing, we recommend they be seen by their medical provider before attending school.
Please remember to contact your school every day to report your student's illness and absence.

If your student becomes sick while at school, they will be referred to our health staff, and if appropriate, they will contact you regarding your student's health needs.
